A qualm that many women have with their wardrobes is that they don’t know how to dress for that “in between” weather. Even the most seasoned of stylists, shoppers, and fashionistas run into this problem from time to time. So when it comes to that time of year, when the weather is about as unpredictable as your hair cooperating in the morning, I remember these two things: layering and textures.

Layering is one of those things that your stylist will ask you about before shopping or going through your closet. “I love to layer,” and “I layer my clothes almost every day,” often get thrown around without any thought. It’s easy to shrug on the first jacket you grab from the closet. But what takes skill is the successful art of putting together pieces that allow you to change your outfit throughout the day, and still look polished and put together no matter what. In order to do this correctly you need to pay attention to the time of year. Is spring right around the corner? Opt for your fave denim jacket like I have here. (I’m a sucker for personalizing a few things every now and then!) Maybe summer is fading away and fall is about to begin, which means you should probably look for a quilted bomber or toggle coat appropriate for September.
The base layer is equally as important as whatever goes on top of it. Here, I’ve chosen a simple black turtleneck from Club Monaco. I love CM for their timeless, flattering pieces that belong in any wardrobe. And it wouldn’t be a Wardrobe Envy outfit without some Alice + Olivia garments sprinkled throughout, which is where my sparkly skirt and bowling tote come into play. White is a very springtime-appropriate color, and next to denim it’s an easy wardrobe formula that anyone can create themselves at home.
Next comes texture — which is why it’s so important to pay attention to what your clothes are made out of. Even though this silver skirt looks great for spring time, it would be a different story if it was a wool pair of trousers or a flannel skirt with tights. Same goes for the turtleneck. A thin, lightweight layer belongs at the base so it can be worn underneath a jacket or scarf without becoming too unbearably hot. A shaggy sweater or cashmere cowl neck would read much too autumn or winter for this look. Just another example of how important texture really is when creating the perfect transitional ensemble.
I’ve completed this outfit with an iconic YSL pump. I’m thrilled that I’m finally able to bring out my sandals again! And these silver showstoppers really tie the whole look together for a day out with clients. I could easily wear this look into the evening by ditching the denim and adding a clutch with a pop of color. Dressing for a transitional time of year really is that easy.
