Color and texture are two very easy things to take into consideration when dressing yourself each morning. “Which shoes complement this top?” “How many bangles is too many with this sequin skirt?” and “Which shade of red for my lipstick today?” are all things I find myself questioning often. However, some women get stuck when it comes to shape. Just because it’s a wrap dress, doesn’t mean that you’re done styling it. A tunic on the wrong body type can swallow a frame up. A skinny jean without a balancing act on top can create a top-heavy look. And if you forget a belt on even the most gorgeous outfit, it can easily fall flat. That’s why it’s so important to consider shape in every outfit you wear.
With Thanksgiving upon us, it’s only fitting that I post about a piece in my wardrobe that I’m most thankful for — this embroidered longline coat from Alice + Olivia. I refuse to blend into the sea of black and navy coats and this coat is my hero piece of the season. Its bright hue, intricate detailing and flattering shape are just a few of the reasons that I grab for this outer layer from my closet time and time again. What’s more? It’s so cozy. And standing up to New York City blasts of wind is a must at this time of year.
Fall is in full swing and winter is just around the corner. That means that layering is my first priority when getting ready every morning. When I’m in California, it’s not as much of an issue, but New York City definitely has me thinking ahead about how I can be most comfortable and stylish with whatever weather the day may bring. One of my favorite ways to layer smart is to go for three pieces on top, and a long jean or skirt/tight combo on bottom. It’s an easy outfit formula that any woman can emulate from garments she already has in her wardrobe as well.
As a stylist, one of my favorite things to do is to tweak trends to make them work in unexpected ways. Fewer things are more satisfying than having someone compliment your outfit, “Oh, I never would have thought of that! You look fantastic.” Camouflage is definitely a go-to for me right now, and I love being able to wear it for all occasions. If you think that camo only belongs in the “casual” section of your closet, think again! By dressing up your favorite printed jacket, you’ve gone ahead and increased the value, longevity, and the versatility of one item, creating a myriad of new options! And who doesn’t love to make the most out of their wardrobe?
