A New Nautical…

June 13, 2018

One of the easiest means of outfit inspiration is traveling. I’ve always thought that, and my recent trip to Newport proves no differently. A very special place to my heart, I make the trip to Newport annually and love every minute from start to finish.  The seaside town is home to neon sail boats, incredible  mansions with jaw-dropping facades available for touring, and melt-in-your-mouth lobster rolls among other mind-blowing seafood. I’m taken with this nautical town’s historic sites, memorable restaurants, and scene views alike. There’s no shortage of inspiration. And I love the opportunity to put my vibrant statement twist into traditional beach town ensembles.

Looking around Newport, it’s easy to find navy and white stripes aplenty accompanied by various shades of khaki. While I have nothing against the classic color palette for a summertime outfit, I wanted to put my own aesthetic out there while keeping in line with the beachy, summer vibes of the city. Not only a bold move, but a challenge as well! Figuring out new ways to pair patterns is part of one’s style evolution, but I have to admit that a floral-and-stripe combo is a classic for a reason. Instead, I incorporated an element of “newness” with my color choices – black, white, and tropical oranges and pinks. (About the exact opposite of navy and eggshell.) This Topshop floral wrap skirt is the only statement piece in need of for this look, so I went monochromatic with my stripes. My favorite part? When the breeze hits the garments just right, they flutter in the breeze to look something like a moving painting.
The NYC in me threw own a black tee and knotted it at the waist. Pairing such a large block of black with a bouquet of flamboyant hues gives the tee new life and reinvents the New Yorker’s closet staple. You don’t see a lot of black in a seaside town in the first place, so I enjoy incorporating this darker neutral as an unexpected element. While unexpected elements are great, it’s equally as important to keep in line with your signature style. So I finished off this look with a bubblegum pink wicker clutch and a sleek pair of melon pumps. It wouldn’t be any outfit of mine without a summer wicker bag and sky-high heels.

What I wore;

Kimono- Alice + Olivia

Skirt- Topshop

Bag- Jcrew
