All New Yorkers have their most-loved spots in the city. The locations that make us want to slow down for a minute, take everything in, and enjoy the on-goings around us. One of my favorite locations in Manhattan is just about in the center of the island, where 74th Street meets the middle of Central Park. There, you can find the infamous Bow Bridge. Featured in movies like The Way We Were and Enchanted (among others,) the iconic structure has a timeless feel of romance and whimsy. Whenever I make my way to the park, I try to incorporate Bow Bridge into my day’s walking trail. As the year ticks on, the park takes on new energies and personalities, which is why I make a point to frequent it with the change of a new season. I thought that capturing a few moments with the bridge’s austere (and nearly centuries-old) architecture would be a great opportunity to showcase a bit of juxtaposition with one of my breezy summertime ensembles.
There are few things more satisfying than putting reality on hold for a few days and escaping to your ideal vacation. You’ve worked hard all season, you’re running on four cups of coffee a day, and all you want to do is relax with your Delia Owens hardcover overlooking a sunset. (And catch up on sleep.) Whatever your ideal vacation is, you’re most likely doing things you wouldn’t be able to do on a regular basis. Things that you can indulge in; things that you truly enjoy. One of my favorite parts of getting away is that I get to choose a new character every morning when I’m getting dressed. I have nowhere that I need to be and no one that expects me to look a certain way, which is a truly freeing feeling for a stylist. Maybe I’ll lean nautical one day, and go completely edgy the next. Marrying inspiration from my surroundings with my own personality – and a bit of whimsical flair – is often my outfit formula of choice when I’m on holiday. And during my most recent trip to the Caribbean, I was inspired by the street markets’ vibrant colors and the breezy sea waves.
When it comes to closet staples, I’m a big believer in a few things: high-waisted denim, a little bit of sequin and sparkle, statement jackets, and of course – animal print. A bit less traditional than the “you need a beige trench coat in your closet” mantra, but trust me – these are just as useful, if not more so. I mention these particular items because of the versatility factor. Versatility is a quality that I look for when shopping, because it means that I’m able to get the most for my money and style the items in multiple ways, for different kinds of occasions and seasons. They’re timeless pieces that stay relevant despite ever-changing trends. They’re styles that I feel comfortable investing in for the long run. And one of my most recent animal print purchases from Alice + Olivia has my heart purring.
At the beginning of the summer, I visited one of my favorite getaway spots in Newport, Rhode Island. Donning stripes and funky prints was just one way I channeled my inner nautical queen in a modern and fun way that weekend, and I recently returned to enjoy the beachy ambiance once more. This time, I set out for more inspiration to fuel unique seaside looks. I do love a traditional silhouette – but if you know me, you know I love a chic twist just as much as a classic staple.
