Color and texture are two very easy things to take into consideration when dressing yourself each morning. “Which shoes complement this top?” “How many bangles is too many with this sequin skirt?” and “Which shade of red for my lipstick today?” are all things I find myself questioning often. However, some women get stuck when it comes to shape. Just because it’s a wrap dress, doesn’t mean that you’re done styling it. A tunic on the wrong body type can swallow a frame up. A skinny jean without a balancing act on top can create a top-heavy look. And if you forget a belt on even the most gorgeous outfit, it can easily fall flat. That’s why it’s so important to consider shape in every outfit you wear.

You can’t go wrong with a classic cinched waist. It’s a great basis for any outfit on any body type. I’ve gone with a belted velvet smoking  jacket from Trina Turk…it’s a relaxed alternative to the traditional office blazer. I also can’t get enough of Trina Turk’s color palettes. Season after season, this line provides beautiful hues that I want in my closet. Robe-inspired pieces not appropriate for your workplace? There are a few velvet and textured blazer options out there that at have a button stance low enough to cinch the waist. Pair that with sleek trousers and you’re good to go.
Personally, I love these wide leg pants and bell bottoms. This pair of leather bells in particular really balances out the top half of this look by creating a nice hourglass shape. I absolutely adore this leather material for its useful and practical warmth during winter as well as the trendy aesthetic. The leather  juxtaposes the softness of the velvet on top. Underneath the velvet I’ve layered a lingerie-inspired camisole. This last delicate shell is just the right fabric to complete the trio of textures.
And what better to complete this ensemble than a Wardrobe-Envy staple…. a vintage bag.  The patches play with the teal in the jacket and the ruby red lipstick, pulling everything together in a fun and playful way. This look is great for daytime meetings and appointments, but could easily be styled for evening as well. Just remember that however you style your favorite pieces, keeping the right shape is key to a successful look!

What I wore;

Jacket- Trina Turk

Came, pants- Alice & Olivia

Bag- vintage
