Pretty in patterns…

March 28, 2017

There’s an art to mixing patterns and prints. By now, you’ve seen me in stripes, polkadots, gingham, florals, and numerous textures. In order to wear these kinds of prints successfully, I mix and match to create new looks every single day. The key formula to creating successful mixed print ensembles is pairing a micro and macro pattern together, and completing the outfit with solid blocks of color.

A micro print like this small-scale floral pairs well with something larger scale, like these striped trousers from Alice + Olivia. The contrast between the two creates beautiful juxtaposition that’s toned down with a solid black zipped cardigan by & Other Stories. The fuzziness is still cozy for chillier days in spring, but lightweight enough that I can enjoy wearing it on sunny days as well. To draw attention to the pattern of the blouse, I’ve opted for my tomato-red bag from J.W. Anderson. Β Not only does it tie the outfit together, but it is also just the right pop of color that this black-and-white look needs.

Because the trousers are streamlined and longer, I’m wearing a minimalistic stacked heel. They give me the height to assure the pants look phenomenal, and don’t draw away from the rest of the outfit when they peek out as I’m walking. When you go to mix prints, keeping the rest of the outfit simple allows the patterns to speak for themselves.
