Traveling has always been a huge source of inspiration for me. I’m fortunate enough to have visited some truly beautiful places with unbelievable venues, delectable food, and of course, stunning scenery. Each time I step foot onto new territory, fresh styling ideas spark to life. If I had to determine the most influential element of these memorable trips, it’s always the colors around me. Flowers on trees, patterned beach blankets, vivid plating at restaurants, and even a glimpse of a bird or a fish can influence some of my most successful looks.

My most recent trip to Tulum, Mexico, was no exception on the inspiration front. I arrived at my hotel, Chiringuito Tulum, and was immediately enamored with the beautiful foliage and the lay of the land. This particular part of Mexico is located in Quintana Roo, and is on the Caribbean coast. That means that I was not only met with vines and flowers, but crystal cerulean waves and a soft, white sandy beach as well. If there was ever such a thing as color and sensory overload, this is the place to experience it!
When I wasn’t playing with the resident cats (named Seven and Eleven), I was enjoying the beach for myself and strolling down the authentic streetsides. The weather made for the perfect opportunity to flaunt flowing maxi skirts and sleeveless numbers. This particular outfit was inspired by the weather, as well as the talented, local Mexican artists. A lightweight, beaded skirt was the star of this look. Patterned and flowing, it just hits past my red and blue platform Gucci sandals for a romantic daytime feel.
Complimenting the red and blue theme is my red belt, showing off the smallest part of my waist. And a simple white halter (a wardrobe staple from Anthropologie) highlighted my tan. As always, my looks include a fresh, basic item so as not to overwhelm the main attraction — the skirt, in this particular instance. Though some could argue that this handmade satchel steals the show. Purchased from a local street vendor, this bag truly emulates what the Tulum experience is all about: color and culture.
I topped off the look with carefully-selected statement jewelry and another vendor purchase, my striped hat. These accessories pull this ensemble together in a care-free and vacation-friendly way. I’m excited to see how I can incorporate these pieces into my daily wardrobe. Because at the end of the day, these pieces are just too captivating to save for getaways.
