Getting the most wear out of your clothes is something that everyone can appreciate. Whether you have a favorite top that you wear all year round, or a dress that easily takes you from work to drinks, we tend to gravitate toward clothes that we can wear in a myriad of ways.

One of my most recent purchases is the perfect example of a year-round staple that I can wear now and wear later: my sunshine yellow skirt. This midi from Alice + Olivia puts a smile on my face with its tiered movement and happy hue. I can dress it up, dress it down — basically wear it anywhere from brunch with my friends to the airport terminal. And the only thing better than finding that perfect piece you can wear over and over again, is finding a unique versatile piece. Uniqueness can present itself in the garment’s shape, fabric, construction, or like this piece, the color.

Now, poor yellow can sometimes get a bad rap. Some are scared of it, and others don’t think it works with their skin tone. We’ve all tried on the wrong shade of the offender in a dressing room and can’t seem to take it off quickly enough. The beauty of yellow is that it comes in a variety of shades and hues so that, with a bit of digging, you can find the perfect piece for you. Cooler yellows (like butter or blonde) are very complimentary on pale or red-undertone skin tones. Warmer yellows (think sunflowers and gold) work great on darker skin, especially with tan or olive undertones. Here I went for a primary pop of lemon yellow, because I like to pair it with neutrals and let the statement color speak for itself.

When styling a bright block of yellow like this, I wanted to keep the rest of my outfits simple. Black, white and yellow is a simultaneously timeless and edgy combo that really stands out in a crowd. For cooler days where the crisp fall breeze is in the air, I’ve opted for a cropped hoodie with platform booties. Mixing the athleisure trend with this skirt dresses it down and keeps me cozy and comfortable, which is a must as the hot August days wind down. For the remaining warmer days we have left of this summer, I took the athleisure trend in a different direction with sleek sneakers and a basic crop top. Accessorizing with hardware-inspired jewelry toughens up the look and balances the athletic with the feminine, and allows me to pair any bag that follows suit. So whether you’re more of a crossbody kind of girl or can’t go anywhere without your favorite leather backpack, this outfit combo works for anyone on the go that wants the most out of her end-of-summer shopping haul. Other than yellow, which bright colors are you rocking this season?
